The final FIA GT1 World Championship was won by the Munnich Motorsport Mercedes SLS of Markus Winkelhock/Marc Basseng, but they did so under a cloud after a collision with title rivals Yelmer Buurman/Michael Bartels sent Buurman’s BMW into a concrete wall.

Buurman appears to have suffered an injury from the heavy impact.

The race was red-flagged with 12 minutes remaining, following the crash, which happened soon after the mandatory pitstops.

Buurman was trying to pass Winkelhock at Redgate corner, and seemed to have made it through by pulling off a switchback move.

But Winkelhock turned right on the exit, the cars collided twice, and Buurman was fired off the track backwards at high speed.

His rearward impact with a wall was sufficient to destroy the concrete block, heavily damaging the rear of the Vita4One BMW Z4.

Buurman was unable to get out of the car, and had to be removed by medics after a long time was taken stabilising his condition at the scene.

Winkelhock’s car also spun to halt, but he was unhurt.

The Fred Makowiecki and Stef Dusseldorp Hexis McLaren was declared the winner of the race, ahead of Peter Kox and Stefan Rosina in the Reiter Lamborghini.

The second Hexis McLaren, of Alvaro Parente and Gregoire Demoustier, finished third.
